Ground broken on 5 new Performing Arts Centers
by BCA Staff Writer
Each of the 5 campuses held groundbreaking ceremonies in succession- Westmont, Prospect, Del Mar, Branham, and Leigh High. Students, teachers, and administrators joined the staffs of BCA and TBI at 7:00am on each of the sunny mornings to witness the exciting events. Dr. Farber, Superintendent of the Campbell Union High School District dug the ceremonial first break in the earth on each occasion.
The Campbell Union High School District has partnered with BCA Architects and TBI Construction Management to provide new 200-seat performing arts centers at five of the district’s high school campuses. These projects will be funded through a combination of local bond funds, state matching funds and Career Technical Education grant funds that the team is currently pursuing through the Office of Public School Construction.
The design of the new theaters improves the quality of teaching spaces on each campus and serves as the main venue for all of the performing arts. The theaters also provide conference facilities for teachers and administration, assembly and lecture space for students, and performance space for the communities of Campbell, Saratoga and San Jose.
Parity is achieved throughout the five campuses by designing one building footprint that integrates well within the varying sites. Flexibility is also provided to accommodate each site’s educational programming needs by providing movable seating that allows for five theater configurations; traditional proscenium with and without an orchestra pit, black box, theater in the round, and thrust stage. A portion of the seating can also be entirely removed to provide a large, open theater space.
The architecture of each theater has been designed to fully blend into the existing buildings by use of similar materials, colors and building scale in relation to existing structures. Existing parking lots are in close proximity to the new theaters enabling access by the entire community both during and after school hours. The site location of each theater is in close proximity to the existing gymnasiums on each site, creating large, shared entry plazas.
